Description of the Special Issue

This special issue brings together cutting-edge research for sustainable software development and operations . As software systems grow more complex and demanding computationally, there is a critical need for integrated, automated practices that reduce energy consumption, minimize carbon footprints, and optimize resource utilization. At the same time, the increasing adoption of AI agents, and other computationally intensive technologies throughout the software development lifecycle introduces new sustainability challenges. Addressing these challenges requires considering not only the efficiency of software systems during execution, but also the environmental impact of the processes, tools, and infrastructure used to design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain them. We welcome contributions introducing novel methods, toolchains, empirical studies, and reproducible evaluations that address sustainability across different stages of the software lifecycle. Relevant work may focus on improving the sustainability of the software development process, reducing the environmental impact of software execution and operations, or jointly optimizing both dimensions. We also welcome contributions that explore the broader ethical and societal implications of software development and operations, extending the concept of sustainability beyond environmental and technical metrics to include responsible, inclusive, and equitable practices.

Scope & Key Themes

We welcome theoretical, empirical, and tool-oriented contributions addressing sustainability across software development and operations. Topics of interest include (but not limited to):

  • Sustainable use of large language models and AI agents in software development and operations
  • Energy measurement, profiling, monitoring, and observability of software systems
  • Sustainable continuous integration, delivery, and deployment workflows
  • Anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and diagnosis of inefficient software behavior
  • Data-driven feedback loops for performance, scalability, and energy-aware workload scheduling
  • Testing, debugging, and quality assurance for green and sustainable software systems
  • Automated performance tuning, resource allocation, and energy-efficient CI/CD workflows
  • Predictive modeling for autoscaling, capacity planning, and sustainable infrastructure provisioning
  • Green and sustainable operation of cloud, edge, distributed, and microservice-based systems
  • LLMs and AI agents for automating green software development and operation tasks (e.g., config optimization, energy reporting, code/config review)
  • AI-based techniques for improving sustainability throughout the software lifecycle
  • Automated refactoring, architectural adaptation, and sustainability-aware software system management
  • Empirical studies, benchmarks, open datasets, and reproducible toolchains for evaluating sustainable automation in DevOps
  • Ethical, social, and environmental implications of sustainable software development and operations
