THE WORKSHOP ===

HC@AIxIA 2024 will feature an engaging mix of presentations of original research and exciting OPEN discussions on the applications and impact of AI in healthcare. We welcome participation from researchers, industry professionals, healthcare practitioners, and anyone interested in the interplay between AI and healthcare.

Presentations will cover topics such as medical imaging and anomaly detection, prognostic models and risk assessment, techniques and model optimization, data-driven innovations in clinical decision support, and digital health transformation. Key areas include AI for personalized healthcare, data augmentation, federated learning, explainability in medical AI, predictive analytics for chronic and acute conditions, and much more.

PROGRAM AT A GLANCE ===

• Keynote: Bridging AI and Healthcare: Trustworthy and Transparent Diagnostic Solutions with Informed Machine Learning, by Sara Montagna
• Regular sessions: uninterrupted bursts of presentations followed by a (moderated) question time and open discussion about the topic(s) of the session (all session speakers will participate together in the discussion).
• Minute madness: uninterrupted bursts of 1-minute lightning talks where the speakers will tease the audience about topics and results of their own works, to be thoroughly discussed during a subsequent poster session.
• Poster showcase: all attendees are encouraged to directly and freely engage with the authors, and open discussions and networking are explicitly fostered among the whole community.
• D4SH@HC: a joint session with the Data4SmartHealth workshop, where the two communities will meet and discuss the latest advancements in AI for healthcare (see https://www.data4smarthealth.it)
• Working Group meeting: (open) meeting of the AIxIA working group on Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare (see https://aixia.it/en/gruppi/hc)

BACKGROUND ===

In recent years, we have witnessed the ubiquitous application of Artificial Intelligence in real-world domains; in particular, AI-based solutions significantly changed the game in medicine and healthcare in several respects (research, management, clinical practice). Indeed, applications of AI in the healthcare domain become a major research topic, that attracts cross-disciplinary research groups.
Medicine and health care require highly complex decision-making to ensure that the trajectory a patient with a disease needs to take for diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and finally outcome is optimal in some sense. Consequently, researchers have to draw methods from the entire field of AI. On the other hand, healthcare and medicine are built upon a rich and evolving body of knowledge, e.g., concerning the pathophysiology of diseases, molecular, genetic, cytological, and histological characterization of stages of a disease, described by temporal and spatial patterns. Such knowledge can also act as background knowledge to guide machine learning. To move towards effective and long-lasting applications of AI in healthcare, it is crucial to elucidate the relationship between what can be expected from AI methods when applied to healthcare problems and the role knowledge of healthcare and clinical medicine can play in developing AI solutions to healthcare and clinical problems.

Following the success of the first two editions, the HC@AIxIA workshop aims at gathering researchers from academia, industry and medical centres to present and discuss the latest research results and ongoing works related to the application and impact of AI in the healthcare domain, to the larger extent, thus aiming at covering a wide spectrum of topics, including theoretical and practical aspects, methodologies, technologies, and systems.
